GP Exercise Referral

Physical activity or exercise can improve your health and reduce the risk of developing several diseases like type 2 diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular disease. Physical activity and exercise can have immediate and long-term health benefits. Most importantly, regular activity can improve your quality of life. A minimum of 30 minutes a day can allow you to enjoy these benefits.

(GP) Exercise Referral Scheme

Use physical activity and behavioral change techniques to support referred clients to make lifestyle changes to improve their health, well being, quality of life and reduce the need for medications. Local authorities (usually councils) have a budget in place for patients referred for exercise & fitness program. This means they will pay for your exercise sessions if you qualify.

It is not the same as a 'recommendation' to exercise.

How does it work?

If a patient with one of the conditions listed above that is receiving care from a Health Professional i.e. GP or Practice Nurse. They can be eligible for referral. If the patient qualify's, documentation is passed to a Scheme Co-ordinator. Based on available budget and medical recommendations the patient will start to exercise regularly under the control of an instructor and in accordance with medical indications.
